New Students: What to Install

New Students: What to Install

Skype: please install the latest version of Skype, and if your child/you don’t have an account please create one, and do a Skype test call to make sure it is working. Note: you do not need a web cam and at no time will a web cam be needed. Please ensure the Skype name has the child’s first name in it somewhere.

Please also make sure you can hear audio output via a speaker or headphones.

The tutor Skype contact is: “roebuckjulia” please send a contact request.

Skype is used as a backup to Electa, the virtual classroom and will only be used in that way.

Electa: (Virtual classroom)

Please install the Electa Plugin:

Once installed, click on the “Test Your System” button. Please get your child to have a look around the Electa application if they’ve not used it before, so they can familiarise themselves with it. Please note that after you have installed Electa, there is no icon to click on. A plugin will automatically work when it’s needed without having to start it up manually.

Note: Your child will need either speakers or headphones to listen to the lesson.

About 10 mins before the lesson, your child needs to log on to Skype the tutor will send via the Skype chat window a URL. When they click on the URL, Electa will start up and they will be prompted to enter their name. Please ask them to enter their real name as nick names confuse!

LearnTec Student (Moodle) Website:

We use a Moodle website to store all lesson slides, handouts/assignments etc. We will be emailing out individual logins to new students just after the first lesson. The tutor will show the students how to use the website during the lesson.

Other considerations:

All lessons are recorded on Electa and links to the lessons are posted on the LearnTec Student Website afterwards. Lesson recordings are only available to students on that course.

Python Beginners Course:

Please install Python, version 3.5.1 or later. DO NOT install Python 2.7.11 this is an old version.

Once installed you need to run : IDLE – the Python working environment. It should look something like this:

Please contact us if you have any problems installing it.

Windows users may have to search via the Start button for “IDLE.exe”.

NOTE: if you run Python and a black screen loads, this is not the right program.

Advanced Python Students:

Advanced Python students, please install Anadonca IDE for Python 3.5:

It’s easier to use the Graphical Installer.
