A full academic year of Year 8 Computing and ICT for children learning at home. Like our Year 7 course, it’s built from resources created for the UK government for use in schools.

Your child doesn’t need to have done Year 7 first. Some Scratch experience helps with the Python unit, but the lessons are written so complete beginners can follow them.

What your child will learn

Six units of six lessons, one per half term:

  1. Vector graphics – building clean icons and logos from shapes, using layers, grouping and transformations.
  2. Computing systems – the CPU, memory, storage and networks, and how they work together.
  3. Developing for the web – building simple websites in HTML and CSS, and comparing traditional search with AI answers.
  4. Representations: from clay to silicon – how data is encoded, from Morse code and ASCII to binary.
  5. Mobile app development – designing a phone app and building parts of it in Code.org’s App Lab.
  6. Python programming – the move to text-based code: sequence, selection and loops.

How the course works

  • Video lessons with captions; the video guides your child through each worksheet
  • A quiz after lessons and an assessment at the end of every unit
  • No printer needed
  • Allow about an hour per lesson, with the focus on practical work
  • Progress is tracked, with a certificate of completion at the end
  • All software is free, or has a free alternative (Inkscape, Python IDLE, online editors)
  • Email support Monday–Friday in term time, with replies within 48 hours
  • Two years’ access from the date of purchase
