The final year of KS3 Computing, designed for home learners and built from the official English schools Computing curriculum originally developed for the Department for Education. It builds the confidence and problem-solving skills your child needs before starting GCSE or IGCSE Computer Science.
Before starting: your child should have completed Unit 6 of our Year 8 course, or already know basic Python: variables, print(), input(), if/elif/else and while loops.
What your child will learn
Six units of six lessons:
- Python programming with sequences of data – working with lists and strings, ending in a mini-project.
- 3D animation – modelling and animating in 3D.
- Data science – collecting, analysing and drawing conclusions from real data.
- Going audiovisual – how images and sound are represented in binary.
- Cyber security – the threats people and organisations face, and how to defend against them.
- Physical computing – programming a BBC micro:bit. No micro:bit needed: a free online simulator works too.
How the course works
- Video lessons with captions, plus worksheets and homework tasks
- Quizzes and an assessment at the end of every unit
- Work at your own pace; one lesson a week takes a school year
